Best Time to Visit Tanzania

Update: Trump’s new travel ban does not affect you if you’re an American. You can still travel to and from Tanzania as a U.S. citizen with no issues. On the heels of this ban it’s more important than ever to support Tanzania and the tourism economy.

The good news is that there’s really no bad time to visit Tanzania, though depending on what you’d like to see there are better times to go. As you can imagine, the wildlife variety + numbers are dictated by the seasons, meaning more rain usually means less visibility.

The dry season, which is from late June to October, offers prime wildlife viewing and as the season suggests, drier weather. While migration across the Serengeti happens year-round, the “Great Migration” that attracts most visitors occurs between July and September when nearly two million wildebeest and zebra are crossing the Mara River. This influx brings many predators to the area waiting to pounce and with that, many more travelers looking for a show. For a slightly less crowded experience that still includes thousands of animals and, BONUS, baby calves being born, late January to February is the time. The only time I would avoid Tanzania is April and May when the rains can be too heavy to see any action.
